Spring cleaning: a 30 day journey to less stuff

I am going to do something different for the month of April. I am actually going to do a real Spring cleaning in my home! What this means is that I will spend a maximum of 60 minutes a day working on a specific area of a designated room in our home. I will use an egg timer to keep me on track. When the timer goes off, I have to stop (this is the part that will be a challenge for me). I have created some catch up/ get ahead days within the 30 day cycle. I will either keep, sell or throw away articles that I find. Selling includes selling items at my church’s garage sale in May. I won’t price them at this time as those things tend to fall off in transport.

As I go, I will photograph and blog my progress. This may not be everyday but I will do it as often as I can. I will still have regular book reviews (sorry I am behind on those). I hope you will join me on my thirty day journey!

As you may have seen in the previous photos, I have already tackled my closet – with 20 minutes to spare! I used that time to start on my nightstand. This was a good thing as I discovered some old tapes that I am going to have to spend my nightstand cleaning time going through to see what should be kept. I am pretty psyched that I got so much done the first day.

What would you like to clean this month? I challenge you to do it!

Today I tackled more of my closet. Mostly I went through lots of scrapbooking stuff. We have lived here 9 years and I probably spent two of them keeping up with scrapbooking. So, although it was hard not to really get into the scrapbooking, I mainly wanted to get rid of stuff I was never going to get to (those negatives? Really? I can’t even deal with the printed pictures I have!) and organize what I do have (supplies and more supplies). I even grabbed a couple of items out of the bottom of my husband’s closet (okay, that is cheating) and did not get to cleaning out the box of stuff from my son’s year of kindergarten or first grade. But I did make progress – yeah me!!  For whatever reason, these posted backwards. Notice my cat’s opinion on what is left.

4/3 – 4/9

Okay, I admit I didn’t do any cleaning from the 3rd through the 5th of April. Was busy then was relaxing then busy again. But I got back to it on the 6th. I finished cleaning the master bedroom – went through my nightstand again and the dresser. What I have found is that I end up with little projects that I am going to have to work on like rolling change ($5 worth of pennies) and the only video tape that was labeled will have to be taken somewhere to be converted to digital (I threw the others away – haven’t watched them in nine years!). I have also decided that I am going to have to start giving things away because that pile in the basement is about to take over the house. I can’t wait until May 1st!

I have also cleaned out a great deal of scrapbooking stuff — tools as well as pictures/keepsakes. I will never get to those negatives as I haven’t even gotten to the pictures yet! Also, do we really need every thing my son drew in first grade? I am just keeping samples. There are some things that I am going to let my husband go through – hats, electric guitars and bullets being a few. But I am trying my best not to let things creep back into the house. So far, so good! Will follow with pictures later.
